A recent study has been conducted to analyse the energy efficiency of homes and businesses in Europe. The results were alarming, and it turns out that us Brits are the least energy efficient of all.
The amount of home and business owners that could make massive savings is overwhelming, and due to a lack of education or perhaps general knowledge on energy efficiency, millions of pounds are being wasted every single year. This lack of awareness means many people think that the cost of setting up energy efficiency measures outweighs the benefit.
But this simply isn't the case, making small changes can make a big difference, and is doesn't have to cost a fortune. Apps that allow you to control your heating are becoming more and more popular, and with claims that they can reduce your heating bill my as much as much as 20% or even 30%, we looked at the facts.
There are a number of key players in this up and coming new market, with the most formidable being British Gas and their Hive app. The app, like many others, allows the user to control their domestic or commercial heating system from and smart phone such as the iPhone, from anywhere at any time (given there is an internet connection of course). But it doesn't stop there, some systems can control the temperature of individual rooms, set timers, remotely shut down or fire up the heating system and much more.
Some of the more sophisticated systems use GPS technology to analyse your location, and calculate how far away you are from you home or business and adjust the heating settings and temperature accordingly. You can turn your hot water off if you don't need a shower for example, or if your working late you can shut everything down.
The potential savings you could make by having such as system are a very real possibility. The upfront cost for installing such a system however, may be off-putting to some, but the rewards will be reaped within a year or two depending on usage.
£1.2 billion has been spent on improving energy efficiency in homes over the past 10 years for 40,000 council houses in Glasgow. The initiative which was set up by GHA has been a success, but now with energy prices increased by over 150%, it is now a real concern that even more investment will have to be made.
With heating costs on the rise, the initial investment by the housing authority to improve the energy efficiency of homes in the region will need to be reviewed. The money was put towards energy saving innitiatives such as insulation, more efficient equipment, and money toward heating bills, but the high increase in fuel bills means its now simply not enough.
According to statistics, even though energy bills are on the increase, not many people are switching suppliers or shopping around for better deals. This could be to do with the fact that many people simply do not know what to do or how to go about it, also with recent stories of people being caught out with complicated contracts and tariffs, it's no wonder householders are reluctant.
With no end in sight for the energy prices growing, the government will be under increasing pressure to help those most vulnerable, like the elderly and the poor.
Our advice for commercial heating and domestic heating is to shop around for the best heating deal, invest in energy saving devices and of course have your heating system checked up on a regular basis.
